No decision taken on Class X CBSE board exams: PM

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has said that no decision has been taken on doing away with the class X CBSE board exam. He said such a decision will not be made in a hurry, without evaluating pros and cons of the process.

The PM made these comments while addressing schoolchildren on the occasion of Children’s Day: “We are still debating on this issue. This is an experiment. We should not take a decision in haste”.

This is in strong contrast to the announcements made in September, by HRD ministry, which favoured abolition of compulsory CBSE board exams for class X from next academic year (2010-11) and introduction of grading system from current year.

This should come as a respite to parents who think that CBSE board exams should continue as they prepare pupils for the competition they have to face after Class X.
